Computer Systems Analyst Job Description

A computer systems analyst, also called a computer scientist or engineer, is someone who develops, designs and tests computers.

A computer systems analyst develops, designs or tests computer systems and networks. They can design an entirely new system or software program or apply their knowledge of computers to improve existing systems. Their work includes setting up databases; installing hardware, web based applications, designing in-house websites; troubleshooting technical problems, etc. As part of the development process, they may design and test prototypes. Some of the skills they would need in their work are software programming, website development, systems analysis and design, database administration, networking or troubleshooting hardware problems (computers/printers etc.).

 

They could work on a variety of projects for different organizations including businesses, schools, non-profit companies or government agencies. They could work on one project for many years or a variety of projects in a short span. A computer systems analyst needs to be able to think logically and creatively and have good problem solving skills.

 

They need to have good analytical skills as they have to come up with solutions, recommend new technologies or applications based on goals, timelines and risks. When problems occur they need to troubleshoot them by finding out what is wrong and fix them. They are also involved in developing a project budget and schedule plan.

 

They brainstorm with the stakeholders about issues; make presentations to meet people's needs, determine risks involved in projects and recommend solutions. They need to have good interpersonal skills as they communicate with clients, management, software developers or other technical staff.

 

They work closely with project managers to plan, develop and test software or hardware.

A SAMPLE COMPUTER SYSTEMS ANALYST JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a technically gifted computer analyst who will manage our systems flow and develop and integrate our programs. You will have to run system checks, analyze computer data, liaise with vendors, prepare reports, troubleshoot software and hardware problems. Your diligence in finding technical solutions will help us increase efficiency and improve on limitations.

 

The ideal candidate must have excellent communication skills, high concentration levels, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The exceptional computer analyst should provide technology design solutions that benefit the organization, anticipate errors in inventory and resolve them, and design applications that are customized for our needs.

 

Responsibilities for Computer Systems Analyst

  • Work with other departments to determine how to support the organization with IT systems
  • Analyze and audit existing systems to identify areas for improvement
  • Mastermind and design systems that will help support organizational goals
  • Work with team members to build and implement IT systems for the the organization
  • Identify bugs and inefficiencies within existing systems and develop patches and fixes
  • Perform routine maintenance on software and hardware that compose existing systems
  • Routinely check the work order ticketing system and complete tasks in order of urgency
  • Ensure that all systems and programs are carefully documented

Qualifications for Computer Systems Analyst

  • 2+ years working in a systems analyst role
  • Superior critical thinking abilities are essential to determine the needs of an organization and how to support them with IT systems
  • Must be capable of working independently with minimal oversight
  • Should have a collaborative attitude and work well as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills are essential for explaining complicated technical processes in simple terms
  • Must have solid time management skills in order to anticipate time needed to complete projects
  • Ability to think creatively and a will to innovate
  • Demonstrate knowledge of common programming languages such as SQL, C++, Java, XML, and more
  • Willing and able to work irregular hours as needed
