Data Scientist Job Description
A data scientist is someone who can take any raw data and turn it into meaningful information. A Data Scientist can change the course of an organization in drastic ways with their insight!
Data science is a fairly new field, and most of the jobs are in Silicon Valley or New York. Large technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Amazon and Apple have been rapidly expanding their data science teams over the last few years.
For example, Uber recently announced that they are hiring a data scientist. According to Indeed.com, the average salary listed for data scientists on May 2016 was $116,000.
The ability to manipulate large amounts of data is becoming more important with the growth of big data and its applications in business and science. Data scientists need to know how to extract, transform and load data from a wide variety of sources. They have to know how to store it, search it, analyze it with the appropriate tools and present their findings in the form of an organized report.
The skills required for this job include some knowledge of statistics and programming as well as experience with databases such as MySQL or Oracle. Other skills that are important are knowledge of machine learning or artificial intelligence programming languages such as Java Script and Python.
