IT Manager Job Description
IT managers make sure the technology infrastructure is secure and efficient, which may involve updating software, managing antivirus protection, backing up data or implementing disaster recovery plans.
IT managers are responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of technology services to support business operations. They manage relationships across a wide variety of organizational units, from marketing and finance to manufacturing, research and development, human resources, order processing, shipping and customer support. In some cases they also need to manage external service providers such as outsourcers or subcontractors.
IT managers are responsible for overall information technology strategy and planning for an organization rather than for specific applications running on one system or particular areas within their organizations such as security or a data center. The role involves advising the rest of the organization on how best to leverage existing technologies in achieving their goals. IT management is therefore concerned not only with assessing technological developments but also on trying to anticipate future potential uses (particularly in terms of new systems or applications).
The basic IT management functions are project management, people management and financial/resource management. The IT role is so broad that the title "IT manager" can be misleading since there will often be many different specialisms included within one person's remit: for example, someone who is responsible for managing projects may also have to manage technical support staff and software development personnel.
