A marketing manager is responsible for the planning, implementation and control of the entire marketing function. They also make sure that they meet the company's objectives in terms of brand positioning, sales growth and profitability.


A marketing manager has an in-depth understanding of the brand positioning, products and services. They know the sales targets, revenue growth and operating costs of the business.


This position requires you to have a good knowledge of purchasing trends particularly as it pertains to technology consumption for research purposes. The ideal individual for this job should be able to present technical information in an understandable way to decision makers and upper management. 


Preparing for the job as a marketing manager entails studying your competitors. You should be able to understand their strategies, what they do well and how you can improve on them. It also doesn't hurt if you know your competition inside out – just like a good sportsman researching his opponents.


A marketing manager should have a strong grasp on the market penetration and how the brand will grow within each segment of the market. Most importantly, you must find ways and means for your brand to stand out from the rest.


In order to get started as a marketing manager, you need an understanding of databases, data mining techniques and retrieval of information – particularly with the use of analytics. As a marketing manager, you must be able to identify data trends and patterns that will allow your organization to get a competitive advantage.


If your brand is well positioned within the market, you need to understand how sales are generated from each business unit or geographical area. You should also know how your company will benefit from the overall growth of the brand.


An individual in this position will have to spend a lot of time studying market conditions, economic factors, buying patterns and demographics. This is not only helpful for the business to succeed but you as its marketing manager too. 


To be effective in this job, you must know how consumers respond to messaging and promotions – online, via social media or printed materials. You should also know how your audience segments behave when it comes to consumerism and decision making processes.
