Mathematicians work in a wide range of areas, including research and development for manufacturing companies, scientific research for health-related projects like vaccines or the cure for AIDS, financial analysis to keep investors informed about potential stock trends. Mathematicians who work in academia might even teach at the university level.
It is important for mathematicians to stay up-to-date on the latest developments in math and other related areas, so they are constantly searching online for articles, newsworthy events or even blogs about new discoveries in their field of work.
Mathematicians need to have excellent critical and analytical thinking abilities in order to accept a given problem, explore the various possibilities, and then narrow down their solution options to solve that problem in the most effective way. They must also be able to work quickly with high accuracy while staying focused on their work for long periods of time.

Math majors should have strong abilities to reason and calculate. Math majors should also have strong reasoning skills as well as the ability criticize others' reasoning skills.
