Operations Research Analyst Job Description

Operation research analysts are employed in a diverse range of industries including manufacturing, healthcare and insurance.

Their role is to help business management and decision makers solve difficult problems such as production scheduling, stock levels and budgeting. Some tools they use to achieve this are linear programming or operations research; simulation models; statistical analysis; data modeling; forecasting techniques and financial analysis. They investigate and analyze a business or part of a business to help managers make strategic decisions about the way in which the organization operates.

 

In order to become an operations research analyst you will need a relevant degree such as engineering, computer science or mathematics. In addition to this they may also require experience working within either production management, financial planning or operations management.

 

The job of an operations research analyst requires lots of mathematical skills, patience and logical thinking but also good people skills in order to work effectively with colleagues or clients.

 

Some employers may ask a candidate to complete an aptitude test prior to interview or require evidence of good communication and IT skills. Many operations research analysts work full time but flexible hours are often available for those who would prefer this as it is essential for them to be able to attend client meetings at short notice.

 

Operations research analysts earn a good salary as they are in high demand. In the US they can expect to earn between $60,000 and $90,000 working for large companies where many opportunities will exist for promotion.

 

In this role you would work within an operations department of a business such as production or finance but there is potential to move into more management roles such as production supervisor, operations manager or financial planning officer.

 

Opportunities exist for travel and promotion within the industry as well as freelance work. The skills required are relevant to a number of different industries therefore many professionals can find employment outside their primary field.
