Statistician Job Description

A statistician is a person who collects and studies statistics. They can work in the private or public sector. It is common for them to be experts in other subjects, too.

The work of the statistician is a mathematical one. It usually involves formulating and testing hypotheses, searching for patterns in data, and drawing conclusions from this material.

The statistical consultant uses their statistical knowledge to advise others on how to carry out surveys, experiments or investigations so that they can be analyzed statistically. This means that the consultant works with experimental data, collected for example, by scientists in laboratories. The statistician then works with this experimental data to advise others on how best to analyze the data and draw conclusions from it.

A statistician is also employed as an expert witness in court cases where the accuracy of statistics is challenged; areas such as the validity of insurance claims, rates of accidents at a road-works site, or the probability of a patient being cured by a new drug are relevant.

The term "statistician" is sometimes used interchangeably with "mathematician" or "researcher", although statisticians may work with the observational data informally and directly. Most statisticians specialize in a particular field of statistics, and perform their work using specialized software such as SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), SAS (Statistical Analysis Software), Stata, or R.
